Demopolis is the largest city in Marengo County, western Alabama. The population was 7,162 at the time of the 2020 United States Census, up from 7,483 at the 2010 census. The city is located at the confluence of the Black Warrior River and Tombigbee River. It is located on a promontory on the east bank of Tombigbee, formed from the Demopolis chalk formation known locally as White Bluff. It is located in the center of Alabama's Canebrake region and is also part of the Black Belt region. Demopolis was founded in the early 19th century after the fall of the Napoleonic Empire. It takes its name from a group of French expatriates, a mix of exiled Bonapartists and other French refugees who had settled in the United States after the colonial government in Santo Domingo was overthrown by enslaved workers. Napoleon had sent troops there in a last-ditch effort to regain control of the island, but they were defeated, largely due to the high death rate from yellow fever. The name, which is Greek for 'City of the People' or 'City of the People' (from Ancient Greek + ), was chosen to honor the democratic ideals underpinning the company. Established in 1817, it is one of the oldest contiguous settlements in northern Alabama. French colonists had founded Mobile on the coast in the early 18th century. Demopolis was incorporated on December 11, 1821.
