Flagstaff (/fl.stf/ FLAG-staf) is a city and the county seat of Coconino County in northern Arizona, southwestern United States. In 2019, the city's estimated population was 75,038. The combined Flagstaff metropolitan area has an estimated population of 139,097. Flagstaff is located on the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau and within the San Francisco Volcanic Field on the west side of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the continental United States. The city sits at approximately 7,000 feet (2,100 m) and is bordered by Mount Elden, south of the San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountain range in the state of Arizona. Humphreys Peak, Arizona's highest point at 12,637 feet (3,852 m), is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of Flagstaff in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. The geology of the Flagstaff area includes numerous volcanic rocks associated with the San Francisco Volcanic Field, ranging in age from the Late Miocene to Late Holocene. They also include exposed Mesozoic and Paleozoic rocks, including the red sandstone of the Moenkopi Formation that was once quarried in the city; Many historic buildings in the city center were built with it. The Flag River flows through the city, but only when it rains or the snow melts. Originally settled by indigenous peoples of pre-Columbian Sinagua, the Flagstaff area has fertile soils of volcanic ash from 11th-century eruptions. The present city was first settled in 1876. Local businessmen lobbied for Route 66 to run through the city, which it did, turning tourism into the local lumber industry and developing downtown Flagstaff. In 1930 Pluto was discovered by Flagstaff. The city continued to grow through the late 1960s and various observatories were also used to select landing sites for the Apollo missions. In the 1970s and 1980s the town center fell into disrepair but was revived in the 1990s with a major heritage project. The city remains a major distribution center for companies such as Nestle Purina PetCare and is home to United States Naval Observatory Station Flagstaff, United States Geological Survey Station Flagstaff, and Northern Arizona University. Flagstaff has a strong tourism industry due to its proximity to Grand Canyon National Park, Oak Creek Canyon, the Arizona Snowbowl, Meteor Crater, and historic Route 66.
