Jerome is a city in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. Founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra's Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, Jrme sits at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, approximately 100 miles north of Phoenix on State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott. At its peak it was supported by rich copper mines and over 10,000 people lived there in the 1920s. According to the 2010 census, the population was 444. Today, it is known for its tourist attractions, such as its 'ghost town' status and local wineries. The city owes its existence largely to two deposits that formed along a ring fault in the caldera of an underwater volcano about 1.75 billion years ago. Tectonic plate movement, plate collision, uplift, deposition, erosion, and other geological processes eventually exposed the top of one reservoir and pushed the other closer to the surface, both near Jerome. In the late 19th century, the United Verde Mine, developed by William A. Clark, produced ore containing copper, gold, silver, and other metals from the larger of the two mines. The UVX United Verde Extension mine, owned by James Douglas Jr., depended on the other giant deposit. Overall, the copper deposits discovered around Jerome were among the richest ever discovered. Jerome made headlines in 1917 when labor riots involving the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) led to the expulsion at gunpoint of approximately 60 IWW members, who were loaded into a cattle car and shipped west. . The ever-fluctuating mine production exploded during World War I, declined thereafter, increased again, and then decreased again during and after the Great Depression. With the ore deposits depleted, the mines were finally closed in 1953 and the population dwindled to fewer than 100 people. Efforts to save the city from oblivion were successful as residents turned to tourism and commerce. Jerome was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. In the early 21st century, Jerome had art galleries, cafes, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum dedicated to the history of mining.
