Tombstone is a historic city in Cochise County, Arizona, USA, founded in 1877 by gold prospector Ed Schieffelin in what was then Pima County, Arizona Territory. It has become one of the last boom towns on the American frontier. The city grew significantly in the mid-1880s as local mines produced between $40 million and $85 million worth of silver bullion, making it the largest silver district in Arizona. The population went from 100 to about 14,000 in less than seven years. It is primarily known as the site of the O.K. knowledge. Corral and currently earns most of its income from tourism. It is also home to the top rated brewery in the state of Arizona. The city was founded on Goose Flats, a plateau above the Goodenough mine. Within two years of its founding, Tombstone, while far removed from any other metropolitan area, had a bowling alley, four churches, an ice house, a school, two banks, three newspapers and an ice cream parlor, as well as 110 saloons and 14 arcades. . Ballrooms and numerous dance halls and brothels. All of these companies were located in and over numerous silver mines. The gentlemen and ladies of Tombstone enjoyed operas performed by visiting companies at Schieffelin Hall Opera House, while miners and cowboys enjoyed performances at the Bird Cage Theater and Brothel. Tensions lurk beneath the surface, leading to deadly conflicts. The mining capitalists and citizens were mostly Northern Republicans. Many ranchers (some of whom, like the Clantons, were also thieves or other types of criminals) sympathized with the Confederacy and the Democrats. Located just 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, Boomtown was an open market for stolen cattle from ranches in Sonora, Mexico by a loosely organized gang of outlaws known as Los Vaqueros. The Earp brothers, Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan, arrived together with Doc Holliday in December 1879 and mid 1880. The Earps had ongoing conflicts with Cowboys Ike and Billy Clanton, Frank and Tom McLaury and Billy Claiborne. The Cowboys repeatedly threatened the Earps for several months until the dispute escalated into a shootout on October 26, 1881. The historic shootout is often described as occurring at OK Stadium. Corral, although it happened not far away on a vacant lot on Fremont Street. By the mid-1880s, silver mines were penetrating the water table and mining companies were investing heavily in specialized pumps. A fire in 1886 destroyed Grand Central's winch and pumping system, and it was considered uneconomical to rebuild the expensive pumps. The town almost became a ghost town, which could only be saved because it was the county seat of Cochise County until 1929. The town's population dropped to a low of 646 in 1910, but rose to 1,380 in 2010. Tombstone it has often appeared in lists of unusual place names. .
