Crescent City (Tolowa: Taa-'at-dvn; Yurok: Kohpey; Wiyot: Daluwagh) is the only incorporated city in Del Norte County, California; it is also the county seat. Named for the crescent-shaped sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City had a population of 6,673 at the 2020 census, up from 7,643 at the 2010 census. The population includes inmates at Pelican State Prison Bay, also within city limits, and those previously expelled from the Crescent City North census site, which is affiliated with the city. The city is also home to the headquarters of Redwood National Park and the historic Battery Point Light. Due to the rich local waters of the Pacific Ocean and associated catches, as well as easy accessibility, Crescent City Harbor serves as the home port for many commercial fishing vessels. The city is located on the Pacific coast of northwestern California, approximately 20 miles south of the Oregon border. Due to its offshore geography, Crescent City is particularly prone to tsunamis. Much of the city was destroyed by four tsunami waves triggered by the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake off Anchorage, Alaska. More recently, the city's port suffered extensive damage and destruction following the tsunamis caused by the March 11, 2011 earthquake off the coast of Sendai, Japan. Several dozen ships and many of the docks to which they were moored sank as tsunami-related wave cycles exceeded 8 feet (2.4 m). Crescent City's climate is temperate, with cool summers for its latitude due to intense maritime moderation. Nearby inland areas behind the mountains have significantly warmer summer temperatures.
