Midland is a ghost town in Riverside County in the southeastern state of California. It borders the Little Maria Mountains and is approximately 20 miles northwest of Blythe. It is accessible from Blythe to the south via Lovekin Boulevard and Midland Road, and from Rice to the north via Midland Road. From 1925 until the 1960s, Midland was a company town owned by the US Gypsum Co. The company mined large quantities of gypsum found in the area. Midland was also home to a large drywall and drywall factory. For a time there was a three section railway between the quarry and mill, with the final section being a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railway running for a few miles. The city's water was transported from Blythe by rail. At its peak, the city had about 1,000 inhabitants. Over the years, as the nature of the plaster found in the area was deemed too heavy, commercial activity in the Midland declined, eventually ending in 1966. Many winter scenes in 20th century Hollywood films used the artificial snow from the Midland. In the 1960s (before the town disappeared), a gypsum mine abandoned in 1948 3 miles west of the plant became the largest fallout shelter in the county. Most of Midland's buildings were torn down and only the foundations remain today. In 1970, a 150,000-gallon tank of water from Midland was tractored to the new mobile home park and residential community of Mesa Ranch in northwest Blythe.
