The San Gorgonio Pass or Ban Pass is a vertical drop of 790 m on the edge of the Great Basin between the San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the San Jacinto Mountains to the south. The pass was formed by the San Andreas Fault, a major transform fault between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. The high mountain ranges on both sides of the pass make the pass a transition zone between a Mediterranean climate west of the pass and a desert climate east of the pass. This also makes the pass area one of the windiest places in the United States and is therefore home to the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm. It serves as a major transportation corridor between the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the Coachella Valley, and ultimately to Arizona and the interior United States. Interstate 10 and the Union Pacific Railroad use the pass. When the railroad was completed by the Southern Pacific Railroad in January 1883, it was considered America's second transcontinental railroad. The pass is one of the deepest mountain passes in the lower 48 states, with mountains rising nearly 9,000 feet (2,700 m) on each side. Monte San Gorgonio, higher but more distant and less visible, is located on the northern slope of the pass and Monte San Jacinto on the southern slope. Mount San Jacinto has the fifth-tallest rock face in North America, and its summit is just six miles south of Interstate 10. The pass is also called Banning Pass because the city of Banning is about 6.5 miles east of the top of the pass. The city itself is named after Phineas Banning, who founded the city.
