Aroya is a small rural unincorporated community in Cheyenne County, Colorado, USA, located on the eastern end of State Highway 94 near its intersection with US Highway 40/US. US Highway 287. Arroyo's name appears on some older maps. The city was named 'Aroya' after a nearby gorge (arroyo is a Spanish word for 'gorge'). The gorge is now called Aroya Gulch. Aroya was built three miles west of its current location in 1870 as a lay camp for the Kansas-Pacific Railroad, but was moved to its current location due to better water supplies. The Wild Horse Post Office (postcode 80862) serves postal addresses in Aroya. Aroya has an airport (Maurer, elevation 4,616 feet, inactive), a railroad (Union Pacific Railroad), and a cemetery (Aroya Cemetery) within a one-mile radius. Aroya also has a one-room former schoolhouse that was used until the early 1960s. The nearby JOD Ranch (named after Joseph Ottmar Dostal, initials JOD) was established in 1883 and ranching operations had existed in the area since since 1870. Dostal was born on November 16, 1842 in Rychnov nad Kneznou. When Cheyenne County was incorporated in 1889, Joseph Dostal was the largest property tax payer in the new county. The nearby airstrips were formerly a private airfield on the JOD Ranch property. The airport is named after Bill Maurer, one of several subsequent owners of JOD Ranch after it was founded by Joseph Dostal. The tracks are barely visible, as they were dirt and grassy tracks, and were plowed over in a failed attempt to plant corn in the early 1980's after Bill Maurer sold the ranch. The building that served as a hangar and the main mast that served as a windsock are still present. Carl 'Bev' Bledsoe, the longest-serving Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, was born in Aroya in 1923.
