Connecticut (/kəˈnɛtɪkət/) is the southernmost state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It borders Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. The capital is Hartford and the most populous city is Bridgeport. Historically, the state is part of New England and the tri-state area along with New York and New Jersey. The state gets its name from the Connecticut River, which cuts it in two. The word "Connecticut" comes from various English spellings of "Quinnetuket", a Mohegan-Pequot word for "long tidal river". Connecticut's first European settlers were Dutch, who established a small, short-lived settlement called the House of Hope in Hartford at the confluence of the Park and Connecticut rivers. Half of Connecticut was originally claimed by the Dutch colony of New Netherland, which included much of the land between the Connecticut and Delaware rivers, although the first major settlements were established by the English in 1630. Thomas Hooker led a group of supporters of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded the Connecticut Colony; other Massachusetts settlers established Saybrook Colony and New Haven Colony. The colonies of Connecticut and New Haven produced landmark ordinance documents that are considered the first constitutions in America. In 1662, the three colonies were united under a royal charter, making Connecticut a crown colony. Connecticut was one of thirteen colonies that rejected British rule during the American Revolution. He was influential in the development of the federal government of the United States. Connecticut is the third smallest state by area, the 29th most populous, and the fourth largest of the fifty states. It is known as "Constitution State", "Nutmeg State", "Supply State" and "Land of Stable Habits". The Connecticut River, the Thames, and ports along Long Island Sound gave Connecticut a strong maritime tradition that continues today. The state has also long been home to the financial services industry, including Hartford County insurance companies and Fairfield County hedge funds. According to the 2010 census, it has the highest per capita income, the second highest level of human development after Massachusetts, and the highest median household income in the United States.
