Middletown is a city in Middlesex County, Connecticut on the Connecticut River in the central part of the state, 16 miles south of Hartford. In 1650, English settlers incorporated it as a town with the original Native American name of Mattabeseck, named after the natives of the area, also known as Mattabesetts. They were among many tribes along the Atlantic coast who spoke Algonquian languages. The settlers renamed the settlement in 1653. When Hartford County was incorporated on May 10, 1666, Middletown was included in its boundaries. In 1784 the central settlement was incorporated into the city as a separate municipality. Both were incorporated into the newly formed Middlesex County in May 1785. In 1923, the Town of Middletown merged with the city, expanding the city limits. Originally developed as a marina and then an industrial center on the Connecticut River, it is now primarily residential. Located on Main Street, downtown serves as a popular shopping, restaurant and bar district near Wesleyan University. Middletown was the county seat of Middlesex County from its incorporation in 1785 until its abolition in 1960. As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 47,717. Middletown, Connecticut is considered the southernmost city in the Hartford-Springfield Knowledge Corridor metropolitan area, home to 1.9 million people. Middletown is a politically progressive city and hosts one of the largest Pride events in all of Connecticut.
