Gordon is a community in northern Alachua County, Florida. Garth Wilkinson 'Wilkie' James established a cotton plantation in Gordon after the Civil War. James was a younger brother of Henry James and William James and an abolitionist. During the Civil War, he served as an officer in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry and was seriously wounded at the Battle of Fort Wagner. Lui rejoined service with the 54th before the end of the war while the regiment was in Florida. After the Civil War, John Murray Forbes, a staunch abolitionist and friend of Wilkie James' father Henry James Sr., advocated the development of cotton farming in the South using freed labor. With funds from Forbes and his father, James began purchasing largely fallow land from Gordon in February 1866. He eventually spent $40,000 on approximately 3,000 acres (12 km2) of land, which was later cleared and planted with cotton. James's aunt Catherine James Temple also invested in the plantation, but most of the funds came from Henry James Sr., who eventually confiscated much of his wealth. James hoped that the plantation would help bring equality and education to freedmen, writing that 'the freed Negro can work with fair and equitable treatment for the good of employer and worker.' The plantation had a school that served black and white students. A post office opened in 1866 with James as postmaster and closed in 1869. Like thousands of other Northerners who bought land cheaply in the South and sought to establish new plantations with freedmen, Wilkie James had no agricultural experience. In the fall of 1867, Wilkie returned to his parents sick with malaria. The cotton crop has been very poor this year due to persistent rains and caterpillars [sic]. The price of cotton had fallen sharply, from $1.00 a pound at the end of the Civil War to 14 cents a pound in 1867. White neighbors were hostile to James' equal treatment of blacks, and the Night Riders harassed the workers of black plantations. The cotton crop failed again in 1868 and 1869. James was able to pay off Forbes' investment within a few years. Wilkie was also able to pay off his aunt Kate, but was unable to repay his father's investment. Wilkie was hospitalized with malaria in the summer of 1869. he Then he returned to Florida to sell as much failed plantation as possible. James left the state in 1871. By the 1880s, Gordon was described as a fairly prosperous farming community. Monteocha Park is a county park in Gordon (Monteocha is another parish next to Gordon).
