Holopaw is an unincorporated community in Osceola County, Florida, United States. It is located at the eastern end of the US 192 and US 441 freeway multiplexes. It has a population of less than 5,000 and is part of the Greater Orlando-Kissimmee statistical area. Holopaw, a Creek Indian word meaning 'sidewalk' or 'road,' was a stop along the Kissimmee Valley Extension of the FEC Railroad. In 1911-1929, the Florida East Coast Railroad built a complete second mainline to Miami. Known as the Kissimmee Valley Branch, running southwest from the busy railroad town of New Smyrna Beach, the new line ran through Maytown-Pennichaw-Osceola-Geneva and was completed in 1912 to Chuluota. The Chuluota-Bithlo-Holopaw-Okeechobee segment was completed in 1915. It finally circumnavigated the Great Lake, terminating at Lake Harbor in 1929. Although it never achieved 'second complete mainline' status, it set impressive records for freight tonnage and timber products. JM Griffin opened a sawmill here in 1923 and built roads and houses for his employees. Holopaw was a company-owned town where most employees rented out their homes and frequented the factory general store. The JM Griffin Lumber Company grew into the largest company in the St. Cloud area, employing over 500 people. It also featured one of the first all-electric sawmills in the country. The mill existed until 1931 and closed during the Great Depression. A new sawmill owned by the Peavy-Wilson Lumber Co. opened in 1935 and employed over a thousand lumber, turpentine and sawmill workers. At the top of the city were more than 2,000 people. The railroad through Holopaw was cut short in 1947 when new service opened between Fort Pierce and Port Mayaca. However, before it was abandoned, the Holopaw-Pennichaw-Maytown route had been leased from the Peavy Wilson Lumber Company, which operated a huge plant in Holopaw. So the trains continued north from Holopaw, hauled by the lumber company's steam locomotives. With the forests severely decimated, the logging company ceased operations in 1951 and the tracks were removed shortly thereafter. Most of the residents left to find work elsewhere, and the postal service ceased in 1954. The Holopaw area is also home to significant ranching, logging, and citrus industries. The Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area is located a few miles east of US 192. To the west is Holopaw State Forest, which lies east of US 192 from the Triple N Ranch Wildlife Management Area.
