Kendall is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2020 census, the region had a population of 80,241. While the US Census Bureau has defined precise boundaries for Kendall as a CDP, the community has a very unclear local definition. Prior to the 1950s, the term 'Kendall' was used to describe an area surrounding US-1, north of Snapper Creek, west of the Everglades, east of Old Cutler Road, and contiguous with the former Rockdale Township, limited South. . This area was largely uninhabited and generally consisted of pine ridges interspersed with fields and copses. As the area experienced rapid development in the 1950s, the nickname 'Kendall' referred to the various communities that settled near present-day Pinecrest and the eastern half of present-day Kendall CDP. As growth shifted westward in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, usage of the term gradually shifted westward as well, and today it is most commonly applied to the area formerly known as West Kendall. Prior to incorporation in 1996, the Town of Pinecrest was part of the Kendall CDP's official boundaries. Kendall is served by Miami Metrorail at Dadeland North and Dadeland South stations in the far northeast. Both stations offer subway service from Dadeland to nearby business centers such as the City of Coral Gables, Downtown Miami and Miami International Airport. Dadeland South Station is a major transit station in the area, connecting the southernmost cities of Homestead and Florida City with Metrorail via a limited-stop bus rapid transit system along the South Miami-Dade Busway.
