Key Largo (Spanish: Cayo Largo) is an island in the upper Florida Keys and is the largest part of the Keys at 33 miles (53 km) long. It is one of the northernmost keys of the Florida Keys in Monroe County and the northernmost of the keys connected by US Highway 1 (the Overseas Highway). There are three census-designated locations on the island of Key Largo: North Key Largo, near the Card Sound Bridge, Key Largo, eight to nine miles from the southern tip of the island, and Tavernier, on the southern tip of the island. In 2010, the three places together have a population of 13,850. None of Key Largo is an incorporated municipality and is therefore locally administered by Monroe County. Key Largo is connected to mainland Miami-Dade County by two highways. The first route is Overseas Highway, the southernmost portion of US Highway 1, which enters Key Largo near the center of the island at Jewishfish Creek and turns southwest. The second route is Card Sound Road, which connects to northern Key Largo at the Card Sound Bridge and heads southeast to connect with County Road 905, which heads southwest and joins US 1 at at approximately mile marker 106. These routes start in Florida City on the mainland. Key Largo is a popular tourist destination and has been dubbed the 'Scuba Capital of the World' because the living coral reef just a few miles off shore attracts thousands of divers and sport fishermen. Key Largo's proximity to the Everglades also makes it a top destination for kayakers and ecotourists. Carl G. Fisher, automobile and highway pioneer and Miami Beach developer, built the Caribbean Club in 1938 as his final design. Key Largo sits between Everglades National Park to the northwest and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to the east, the United States' premier underwater park that protects part of Florida Reef, the only living barrier reef in the continental United States. .
