Palmdale is an unincorporated community in Glades County, Florida located on US 27 north of the intersection with State Road 29. Palmdale Land was originally part of DeSoto County and was incorporated into the Florida Fruit Farm Corporation. He sold the land to the Palmdale Land Company, which sold the land to five hundred settlers, establishing the first community in 1911. Many farmers were 'discouraged' by the shortage. Due to transportation restrictions, they left the area in 1917. Many of these farmers left behind their homes, possessions, and furniture. New farmers and pioneers of the region would settle on the abandoned haciendas. Eventually, bushfires destroyed many of the original homesteads. The Tin Lizzie Trail, two dirt roads, connected Arcadia and Lakeport. The Hogan family, Wibb family, Streety Whidden family, Hendry family, Jones family, Cobb family, Willie Williams family, Norman Milton, Emery Nickelson, Lacy Raulerson and Joe Peeples, Sr. There was also a Mr. Thompson who ran a business. the railway warehouse. Mrs. Willie Powers then took over the role of 'postman'. Once upon a time there was a photography studio in Palmdale. Palmdale's economy was buoyed by a brief 'boom' in the early 1920s when political rallies were held on Fisheating Creek. 'Barbecues and political speeches attracted between 500 and 700 people.' An Atlantic Coast Line train from Moore Haven brought people to watch the demonstrations. Oil production began in 1921 by the Palmdale Land Company under the supervision of company president 'Mr. Marcus' and vice president E. F. Caldwell. At Caldwell's invitation, the Brewton Oil Company, led by Robert J. Brewton, began drilling already when Caldwell was ' positive about oil exploration. Gopher Gulley and Harness Pond were the first two drill sites, Harness Pond at 2,800 feet , set to dry up. After there was no oil, Brewton Oil left the company. Geologists Smith Brooks and Ed Barnett claimed Harness Pond was 'not deep enough' at 2,800 feet. The Lykes brothers bought land and opened the public boating, horseback riding, RV fishing, and tent camping through Fisheating Creek Outpost and other wilderness areas.The acclaimed Hartman Preschool was founded by John and Audrey Hartman in the 1970s and was known for 'tissue culture' and the cloning of plants. The cloning process was passed down from father to son, Robert Hartman, who shipped millions of plants around the world in the 1980s and grown them from sections of tissue. Hartman Nursery has been recognized by Forbes magazine as 'one of the few successful commercial cloning companies'. At the time, the nursery had 'research facilities, culture laboratories, greenhouses and a natural area'. It is home to Gatorama, which bills itself as 'some of the largest gators and gators in Florida' and was built by Cecil Clemons in 1957. It is one of the top alligator attractions in the state and is also home to the largest breeding colony of captive American alligators in North America. On October 21, 2016, a fire destroyed the historic Palmdale Cracker, a restaurant that had reopened just the year before. Owner Larry Taylor described the restaurant and general store as 'the only nucleus that kept these people together'. The 1930s house with its large porch was a meeting place for 27 neighbors and travellers. The building was one of the few historic landmarks in this part of Glades County.
