Paradise Park, as indicated on the sign, was a color-only tourist attraction and recreational facility one mile from Silver Springs, near Ocala, Florida, and was founded and operated by the same management. It offers similar amenities such as glass-bottom boats, 'jungle cruises,' a petting zoo, dance pavilion with jukebox, entertainers, a softball field, a pitch-iron horse, and a sandy beach with a lifeguard. It operated from 1949 to 1969 and closed shortly after the desegregation of Silver Springs. He served African-American clients who were banned from going on the whites-only boat in Silver Springs. As in the seemingly separate but equal era, 'Paradise Park was fine, but no match for the white parts of Silver Springs.' At the time, it was one of only three Florida state beaches open to African Americans. Admission was free, but swimming was 35, which allowed you to store towels and clothes. Herpetologist Ross Allen even put up a reptile exhibit in the park, similar to the one on the river in Silver Springs. According to a panel from the advertisement cited below, 'Ross's wildlife exhibit Allen' included 'dozens of alligators, hundreds of snakes, monkeys, deer, birds, turtles, lizards, exotic animals' and 'Ole Coochie', a 'giant alligator'. According to one brochure, there was 'the quirky Ross Allen Reptile Institute with its vast collection of snakes, alligators, Florida wildlife, birds, and an ever-changing array of lions, tigers, and other reptiles.' Periodically, Mr. Allen, known throughout the world as a great snake expert, will tell you about their habits, 'healing' them with poison. On Labor Day there was a beauty pageant sponsored by a local American Legion post. 'In 1949, Mildred Jones of Sanford was crowned the first Miss Paradise Park.' The Future Farmers of America held their conventions there. Musician BB King visited once, as did Mary McLeod Bethune, who 'didn't care much for Paradise Park' 'because it was separate'. There was a day at Bethune-Cookman College that benefited the university. Silver Springs began accepting black guests in 1967. During Paradise Park's last season, 1968-1969, it was open only on Saturdays. Sundays and holidays. It quietly closed in 1969. The area that was once Paradise Park is now overgrown.
