Port Leon, Florida was a river port city in what is now Wakulla County, Florida (then Leon County, Florida) that existed for only about six years during the first half of the 19th century. Port Leon is listed as an 'extinct city' by the Florida State Library and Archives, with only remnants remaining today. Settled in 1837 largely by former Magnolia residents, Port Leon was located about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of San Marco on the east bank of the San Marco River. Like its neighbors Saint-Marc and Magnolia, it was a major port for cotton plantations in the Red Hills region of Florida and Georgia. The Tallahassee Railroad reached Port Leon in 1839. At that time, the cars and the railroad carried between 30,000 and 40,000 bales of cotton to area ports each year. A bridge over the San Marcos River connected the port to the railroad and docks for loading ships bound for the east coast of the United States. Port Leon received a post office in 1840 and was incorporated in 1841. In the same year, Port Leon suffered from a severe yellow fever epidemic along with the other communities in the area. On March 11, 1843, it was elected the seat of the new Wakulla County. On September 13, 1843, a major hurricane with 10-foot storm surge struck the area, devastating Port Leon and extensively damaging the nearby towns of Magnolia and St. Marc. Port Leon was abandoned and many of its residents moved inland to the new city of Newport. Port Leon at its peak had a population of several hundred with 8-10 shops, docks, warehouses, a hotel, two taverns, a newspaper and an annual fair. One of the successful citizens was Daniel Ladd, who married into the Hamlin family of Maine, who founded the town of Magnolia.
