St. Augustine (/stin/ AW-g-steen; Spanish: San Agustn [san austin]) is a city in the southeastern United States and the county seat of St. Johns County on the North Atlantic coast. East Florida. Founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in what is now the United States. San Agustn was founded on September 8, 1565 by the Spanish admiral Pedro Menndez de Avils, the first governor of Florida. He named the colony 'San Agustn' because his ships carrying colonists, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida eleven days earlier, on August 28, the feast of San Agustn. The city has been the capital of Spanish Florida for more than 200 years. When the colony was founded in 1763, it was declared the capital of British East Florida. Great Britain returned Florida to Spain in 1783. Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, and St. Augustine became the capital of the Florida Territory following the 1821 ratification of the Adams-Ons Treaty. That same year, the Florida National Guard made the city its capital. The territorial government moved and made Tallahassee the capital of Florida in 1824. St. Augustine is part of Florida's First Coast region and the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Since the late 19th century, St. Augustine's distinctive historic character has made the city a tourist attraction. The fort remains a major tourist attraction. Much of the fort is made of shell limestone.
