Fort Benning (also known as Fort Moore) is a U.S. Army base near Columbus, Georgia along the Alabama-Georgia border. Fort Benning supports more than 120,000 active duty military, family members, reserve soldiers, retirees and civilian employees every day. It is a power projection platform with the capability to deploy combat-ready forces by air, rail and road. Fort Benning is home to the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, United States Army Military University, United States Army School of Infantry, Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as the School of the Americas) and elements of the 75th Ranger Regiments, 1st Security Forces Support Brigade and other contracted units. It is named after Henry L. Benning, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Fort Benning is one of ten U.S. Army installations named after former Confederate generals. The FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, passed after President Trump vetoed it, includes a provision that all 10 Army bases, named after prominent Confederate military leaders, must be famous. The Congressional Naming Commission issued its recommendation on August 8, 2022 to rename Fort Benning Fort Moore after Lieutenant General Hal and Julia Moore, who are buried in office, as well as Julia's parents. On October 6, 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin accepted the recommendation and directed the name change to occur no later than January 1, 2024. Fort Benning has been home to the infantry since 1909. As of 2005, Fort Benning is was transformed into a maneuver center of excellence after the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) decided in 2005 to consolidate a number of schools and facilities to create several 'centers of excellence'. This transformation included the relocation of the Armor School from Fort Knox to Fort Benning.
