Pin Point is an unincorporated community in Chatham County, Georgia, USA; It is located 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Savannah and is part of the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pin Point is 1 mile wide and 1.6 miles long and sits 13 feet above sea level. The city is best known for being the birthplace of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (June 23, 1948) and for its longstanding Gullah-speaking community. It was a rural settlement founded by people who were freed after the abolition of slavery after the civil war. In the 1890s it was settled by people from nearby Ossabaw, Green, and Skidaway Islands. In 1897, they founded Sweetfield of Eden Baptist Church. In 1926, a Rosenwald Schoolhouse was built in the Pin Point community as part of an initiative to build schools for Southern African-American children, who at the time only had access to underfunded and segregated schools. The city sits on the edge of Shipyard Creek, an arm of the Moon River. The surrounding terrain features large oak trees and coastal mudflats as well as crab and oyster habitat. The community's primary employer from the 1920s to the 1980s was the crab and oyster cannery. Pin Point remains a small, predominantly African American community with an established Gullah community. The Gullah people have been able to maintain many cultural ties to their origins in West Africa where many of their ancestors were captured and later enslaved in the United States. Pin Point speaks Gullah, the only English-based Afro-Indian creole language in the United States. It is not known how many native speakers there are in the city, but there are approximately 5,000 arable speakers and 300 native speakers along the southeast coast. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a native Gullah (then called Geechee) speaker. He attributed his silence before the Supreme Court to his embarrassment at speaking as a teenager at an all-white school where classmates teased him because he didn't speak 'standard English.' The Pin Point Heritage Museum, formerly the Varn and Sons Oyster and Crab Cannery, is dedicated to the Gullah/Geechee culture and community.
