St. Simons Island (or simply St. Simons) is a barrier island and census-designated place (CDP) on St. Simons Island in Glynn County, Georgia, United States. Parish and island names are interchangeable and are referred to simply as 'St. Simons Island' or 'SSI' or known locally as 'The Island'. St. Simons is part of the Brunswick Metropolitan Statistical Area, and as of the 2020 United States Census, the CDP had a population of 14,982. Located on the southeast coast of Georgia midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, St. Simons Island is both a resort and residential community. It is the largest of Georgia's famed Golden Isles (along with privately owned Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island). The island's warm climate, beaches, variety of outdoor activities, shops and restaurants, historic sites, and natural surroundings attract visitors. In addition to its permanent resident base, the island enjoys an influx of visitors and part-time residents throughout the year. The 2010 census found that 26.8% of total housing was for 'seasonal, recreational or occasional use'. Most of the commercial and residential areas are in the southern half of the island. Much of the northern half remains swampy or wooded. A large swath of land to the northeast has been turned into a nature preserve with hiking trails, historic ruins, and pristine marine forest. Cannon's Point Preserve is open to the public on certain days and times. Originally inhabited by tribes of the Creek Nation, South Georgia, which includes St. Simons Island, was contested by the Spanish, British and French. After securing the colony of Georgia, the British cultivated the land for rice and cotton plantations, which were worked by large numbers of enslaved Africans creating the only Gullah culture that survives to this day. The main way to reach the island is by road through the Calzada FJ Torras. Malcolm McKinnon Airport (IATA: SSI) serves the island's general aviation.
