Tybee Island is a city and barrier island in Chatham County, Georgia, 18 miles east of Savannah, United States. While the name 'Tybee Island' is used for both the island and the city, they are not geographically identicalonly part of the island's land area is within the city. The island is the easternmost point of Georgia. The famous phrase, 'From Rabun Gap to Tybee Light,' meant to illustrate Georgia's geographic diversity, juxtaposes a mountain pass near the state's northernmost point with the offshore island's famous lighthouse. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 3,114, and the entire island is part of the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Tybee Island was officially renamed 'Savannah Beach' in a publicity stunt in the late 1950s and has since reverted to its original name. (However, the name 'Savannah Beach' appears on official state maps as early as 1952 and not until the mid-1970s.) Long a quiet retreat for Savannah residents, the small island has become a popular tourist destination. Meeting point for tourists outside the Savannah metropolitan area. Tybee Island is home to the first of what later became the Days Inn chain of hotels, the oft-photographed Tybee Island Lighthouse, and historic Fort Screven. It is one of the few places where the US Air Force has accidentally dropped an atomic bomb (during a failed military exercise in 1958). Although the 'Tybee bomb' did not detonate (and, according to some reports, was not armed with a fuse), concerns remain as the Mark 15 nuclear bomb lost in the crash has never been found.
