Kalihi is a district of Honolulu on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, United States. Separated by the Likelike Freeway (Route 63), it is bordered by downtown Honolulu on the east and Moanalua and Salt Lake on the west. Kalihi is the name of the Ahupua'a (former division of land) between and Kaplama in Kona County (now Honolulu) of O'ahu. The Ahupua'a consist of Kalihi Uka, Kalihi Waena and Kalihi Kai. Historically, Kalihi Kai was the site of the former leprosy receiving station, where suspected lepers were screened before treatment or shipped to Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka'i. Kalihi was also known for his fish ponds at pili, Pahouiki, Pahouni, Auiki, and Ananoho near what is now the access road to Sand Island (Highway 64), all of which have since been filled in. Kamehameha I's harbor master, Captain Alexander Adams, maintained a residence near pili Pond. The name comes from ka lihi, which means 'the edge' in the Hawaiian language, and was also used for neighborhoods on other islands. Located at 212010N 1575235W / 21.33611N 157.87639W, it was probably named in 1856 for Prince Lot (later King Kamehameha V) Bach; it is narrow and steep in its upper course (with its source around 212229N 1574855W / 21.37472N 157, 81528W), but widens towards the lowland as approaching the port. from Honolulu, with its mouth at 211951N 1575326W / 21.33083N 157.89056W. The lower valley has long been a residential area and is home to many old houses. Near the water it becomes commercial and maritime. Kalihi is known to Pele's family as his sister, mother and wife of Wakea. In this region of Honolulu they had many adventures: the one that saved Wakea (her husband), 'that we took for the sacrifice of kissing him'.
