Kneohe (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kaneohe]) is a census-designated place (CDP) within the city and county of Honolulu, located in Koolaupoko County of the state of Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. In the Hawaiian language, kne ohe means 'bamboo man'. According to an old Hawaiian tale, a local woman compared her husband's cruelty to the sharp edge of a cut bamboo; thus the place was called Kneohe or 'the bamboo man'. At the 2020 census, the population was 37,430. Kneohe is the largest of several communities along Kneohe Bay and one of the two largest residential communities on Oahu's windward side (the other being Kailua). The commercial center of the city mainly extends along the Kamehameha Expressway. Due to abundant rainfall, Kneohe has been an important agricultural area since ancient times. Today, Kneohe is primarily a residential community with very little agriculture. The only major crop in the region is bananas. Notable attractions include the Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden and the New Hawai'i National Veterans Cemetery. Access to Kne'ohe Bay is primarily via the public pier and boat dock near He'eia Kea. Access to Coconut Island (limited) is via the State Pier on Lilipuna Road. Marine Corps Base Hawaii overlooks the southern end of Kneohe Bay from central Kneohe, although the city extends along Kneohe Bay Drive to the edge of the base. There are three golf courses in Kneohe: Pali Golf Course (public), Koolau Golf Club (private but open to the public), and Bayview Golf Park (private but open to the public).
