Rockdale, Iowa was a small unincorporated town that was once located south of Dubuque, Iowa between Dubuque and Key West, Iowa. The town was located on Catfish Creek in Dubuque County, Iowa, and was the site of one of the first mills in the state of Iowa. In 1834 or 1835, David Hutton and his son built a sawmill. Originally the mill was known as The Catfish Mills. In 1839 the mill was sold. James Pratt and Walter Manson bought the mill in 1840 and renamed it Rockford Mill, replacing the original log house with a four-story building. This mill could produce 90,000 bushels of wheat annually, and the flour produced was of the same quality as the flour produced in St. Louis, Missouri. As a result, the factory enjoyed a monopoly in the upper Midwest until other factories were established. Pratt and Manson will operate this facility for the next 25 years. At the time, Rockdale was a center for farmers in the area. Operations at the Rockdale facility were temporarily suspended due to the Rockdale flood. Eventually the mill will return to producing flour. In 1878 the mill burned down. Thomas Watters Jr. rebuilt the mill as a stone building. Name changed to South Dubuque Mill. J.F. Gondolfo will buy the mill in 1885. He will make some repairs and the mill will continue to produce flour for several years. In 1901 the mill was rented to a company that managed it for the next 14 years. In 1915 the mill was definitively closed. For a time it was used as a milk barn until it burned down in 1927. The village eventually grew to include a saloon, hotel, shops, blacksmith's shop, several houses and a post office. The villagers built a log Methodist church in 1830. The present red brick building was built in 1874 at 1500 Old Mill Road. Rockdale Methodist Church stands and is still in use today with its cemetery to the side and in the background. Rockdale's population was 132 in 1902 and 85 in 1925.
