Saylorville Lake is a reservoir on the Des Moines River in Iowa, United States. It is located 11 miles (18 km) upriver from the city of Des Moines and 214 miles (344 km) from where the Des Moines River meets the Mississippi. It was built as part of a flood control system for the Des Moines River to help control flood crests from the Mississippi, of which Des Moines is a tributary. The lake and dam are owned and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, District of Rock Island. At its normal elevation of 836 feet (255 m) above sea level, Saylorville Lake covers an area of 5,950 acres (24 km2) or 9.3 square miles (24.1 km2) and extends approximately 17 miles ( 27 km) upstream. With full water, the lake can cover an area of up to 16,700 acres (68 km2) or 26.1 square miles (67.6 km2) and be up to 54 miles (87 km) long. At this point, any further inflow to the lake will be diverted via an emergency spillway west of the main dam structure. The reservoir's record level was 892.03 feet (271.89 m) above sea level on July 11, 1993, during the Great Flood of 1993. Construction of Saylorville Dam was approved by Congress in 1958. Excavations at the site they began in July 1965 and were completed in September 1977 and commissioned. The dam itself is 6,750 feet (2,057 m) long, 105 feet (32 m) high, and 44 feet (13 m) wide at the top. The lake is also used for many recreational activities in central Iowa, as there is extensive state park infrastructure surrounding the lake, including Big Creek State Park. The Corps of Engineers maintains several recreation areas, campgrounds, and boat ramps around the lake. Boating and swimming are popular, as are camping, deer and wildfowl hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and disc golf.
