Springdale is a small unincorporated community in Cedar County, Iowa, USA. Historically, the city was populated primarily by Quakers and was a major station on the Iowa Underground Railroad. Beginning in 1857, Springdale was the western base of operations for abolitionist activist John Brown, who lived in the John Hunt Painter home and trained the ten men who accompanied him on his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The ten were his son Owen Brown, John Kagi, Aaron D. Stevens, Richard Relf, Charles W. Moffitt, Luke J. Parsons, Charles H. Tidd, William Leeman and Richard Richardson. In 1858 they moved east. In February 1859, Brown appeared with twelve enslaved men and women from Missouri. In July 1859 two local boys, Edwin and Barclay Coppoc, joined Brown in raiding him. The first was captured, tried and executed; Barclay escaped and later died while serving in the Union Army. Springdale was also the home of Lawrie Tatum, a farmer who served as an Indian border agent and legal guardian of future President Herbert Hoover. The main thoroughfare through the city is the Herbert Hoover Highway. Springdale no longer has a downtown business district. It is a group of houses with a United Methodist Church. William Maxson's house, which housed Brown's men, was demolished in 1938, but its site is marked by a Daughters of the American Revolution plaque. Although Maxson is often described as a Quaker, he was raised in the faith but considered himself a believer in spiritualism at the time of Brown's visit.
