North Fork is an unincorporated community in Lemhi County, Idaho. Its name comes from the confluence of the south-flowing North Fork of the Salmon River with the north-flowing Main Salmon River, which bends here at nearly a right angle and flows west across the state to Riggins. US 93 serves the community, connecting it to Salmon to the south and Lost Trail Pass to the north. Longtime families in the community include the Cummings, Prestwich, Randolph, Hughes, Smith and Maxwell. The North Fork community is built around the North Fork Store, which also houses a post office and small liquor store. There are two hotels and a US Forest Service station. The parish includes a nondenominational Christian church 0.5 miles southeast of the North Fork and a small private Catholic chapel about 5 miles north just off US 93 North. Notable creeks with hiking trails and stunning views include: Trail Gulch, Four of July, Hull Creek, Hughes Creek, Lick Creek, Ditch Creek, Burns Gulch, Indian Creek and Ulysses Lookout. Lewis and Clark passed through this area and encountered a local Indian, Toby, who caused the loss of the expedition while crossing Montana. Historians believe they found Toby at the confluence of the North Fork and Salmon rivers, or at the mouth of what is now Hull Creek, named after farmer John Hull, and enlisted his help as a guide. A monument was once erected to commemorate this meeting. This led to the name of the Idaho/Montana mountain pass 'Lost Trail'. The 'Lost Trail Powder Mountain' ski area is also named after it. The North Fork is 3,620 feet (1,103 m) above sea level.
