Bannockburn is a village in West Deerfield and Vernon Townships in Lake County, Illinois, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 1,013. The city is generally considered to be part of the North Shore region of the Chicago metropolitan area. Frank Lloyd Wright's Friedman House is located in Bannockburn. Bannockburn was founded by Scottish property developer William Aitken, who planned a 110-acre (0.45 km2) 'property' community in inland Lake County. Named after the Scottish village of Bannockburn, the village began construction in 1924 and was incorporated in 1929. Aitken designed his settlement for wealthy members of his bridge and country club. His plan for Bannockburn included large grounds to mimic country life, and this plan has survived; In fact, the original minimum area of 1 acre (4,000 m2) for residential lots was raised to two. Gradually, Bannockburn expanded its boundaries to its current area of 1,318 acres (5.33 km2). The Tri-State Tollway was built through the city in the 1950s and has encouraged its growth, although noise pollution from traffic is an ongoing local concern. In the late 1960s, after some debate, the citizens of Bannockburn agreed to build the first of several retail parks on the northern edge of the village. In 1984, the first business district was built along Illinois Route 22. Bannockburn's community services grew slowly to keep taxes low, but a police department was established in the 1970s, and a community center was built in 1992.
