Blue Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois approximately 16 miles south of the Chicago Loop. Blue Island borders the city of Chicago and shares its northern border with that city's Morgan Park neighborhood. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 22,558. Blue Island was founded in 1830 as a way station for settlers traveling the Vincennes Trail, and the settlement thrived because it was conveniently located just a day's drive from Chicago. The late 19th-century historian and editor Alfred T. Although initially settled by 'Yankees', Blue Island was the entry point for many American immigrants, beginning in the 1840s with the arrival of a large German population who remained a significant part of the city's ethnic makeup for many years. In 1850, half of Blue Island's population was either foreign born or foreign born children of residents. Later large groups arrived from Italy, Poland, Sweden and Mexico. The city is one of eleven incorporated areas in Illinois designated by the White House as a Preserve America community.
