Buffalo Grove, officially the City of Buffalo Grove, is a city in Lake and Cook County, Illinois. It is a suburb of Chicago and is approximately 50 km northwest of downtown Chicago. As of the 2020 census, Buffalo Grove had a population of 43,212. It covers a total of 9.6 square miles (25 km2) of land, with the upper three-quarters in Lake County and the lower quarter in Cook County. Village roads, such as Lake Cook Road and Illinois Route 83, converge on I-294, which takes motorists to O'Hare International Airport, 20 miles (32 km) south of Buffalo Grove. Prior to westward expansion, Potawatomi Indian tribes lived in what is now the region. The name 'Buffalo Grove' comes from the English translation of the Potawatomi name Buffalo Creek, which runs through part of the city. The first settlers sold their land to German Catholic agricultural immigrants, who established St. Mary's Church and a school. The rural area changed little until postwar Korean developers bought the area and parceled it out for veterans. Founded in 1958, Buffalo Grove experienced a population boom over the next three decades, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008. Nearly every Buffalo Grove school has achieved commendable status or received state awards in the 21st century. The city offers dozens of recreational facilities, parks and festivals, including a month-long farmer's market, two golf courses and the famous Buffalo Grove Days. Although the schools and low crime rate attract immigrant families, the city's population has stabilized since 2000. Buffalo Grove has an elected governing council with self-governing status. Due to Buffalo Grove's two-county location, different state and national counties represent each side. The local government's public works department is accredited by the state. Economically, residents work in health care, education, and professional services, while the city's businesses employ 20,000 day workers in 10 million square feet of commercial and industrial space.
