Cahokia was a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. It was east of the Mississippi River in the greater St. Louis area. According to the 2010 census, 15,241 people lived in the city, up from 16,391 in 2000. On May 6, 2021, the city ceased to exist and was incorporated into the new City of Cahokia Heights. The name refers to one of the clans of the historic Illini Confederacy, which brought together the first French explorers in the region. Early European settlers named the nearby (and long-abandoned) Cahokia mounds in present-day Madison County after the Illini clan. But the UNESCO World Heritage Site and State Historic Park were developed by the Mississippian culture, active here from AD 900 to 1500. They created a sprawling urban complex, the largest in the Mississippi Cultural Area in the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. French Canadian settlers founded the town of Cahokia as a Catholic mission in 1696. The historic Holy Family Church is the oldest continuously active Catholic community in the United States and the oldest church west of the Allegheny Mountains. Other notable federal and colonial buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places include Cahokia Courthouse (c. 1740, French Colonial style); and Jarrot Manor (c. 1810).
