Orangeville is a city in Stephenson County, Illinois. The town sign indicates a population of 800 as of January 2021. As of 2020, the population was 738. As of the 2010 census, the population was 793, up from 751 in 2000. The first white settlers arrived in the area in 1833 and the city was founded in 1851 by John Bower , who is credited with being the founder of the city. In 1867 Orangeville incorporated as a city. The city's CBD is home to a number of 19th-century commercial buildings, many of which were built during the 1888-1914 railway boom. With the onset of the Great Depression, business in Orangeville began to decline and the last bank closed in 1932. Another bank opened in the city in 1956 and is still in the city today. Some recent infrastructural improvements have restored some of the former decoration of the city. Orangeville is approximately 2 miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border and approximately 35 miles west of Rockford, Illinois. Orangeville is just off Illinois Route 26 between Monroe, Wisconsin and Freeport, Illinois. The town itself stands on farmland surrounded by valleys and rises from Richland Creek at its western end across the High Street to the central business district, where the Central House Hotel occupies the highest point. Public education in Orangeville is the responsibility of Orangeville Community School District #203, which formerly operated an elementary school on the south side and a combined middle and high school on the east side. In 2019, the district merged the elementary school with East Side Common High School to form Orangeville High School. The former primary school has been transformed into a multi-family complex.
