Skokie (/skoki/; formerly Niles Center) is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States, bordering the northern city of Chicago. At the 2020 census, the population was 67,824. Skokie is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago Loop. Its name comes from a Potawatomi word for 'swamp'. For many years Skokie billed itself as 'the greatest city in the world'. Skokie's streets, like those in many suburbs, are largely a continuation of Chicago's highway network, and the Chicago Transit Authority serves the city, further strengthening its connection to the city. Originally a German-Luxembourg farming community, Skokie was later settled by a large Jewish population, particularly after World War II. At its peak in the mid-1960s, Jews made up 58% of the population, the largest percentage of any Chicago suburb. Skokie still has many Jewish residents (about 30% of today's population) and more than a dozen synagogues. Home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, opened in 2009 in northwest Skokie. Skokie has twice received national attention for court cases decided by the US Supreme Court. In the mid-1970s he was at the center of the National Socialist Party of America v. Town of Skokie where a Nazi group, supported by the American Civil Liberties Union, invoked the First Amendment to stage a Nazi demonstration in Skokie. There was a large population of Holocaust survivors in Skokie at the time. Skokie ultimately lost that lawsuit, though the rally never took place. Although Skokie was not directly involved in the case, a 2001 ruling by the city and 22 other area communities led the court to limit the powers of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
