York Center is an unincorporated community in York Township, DuPage County, Illinois, United States. York Center is located near Meyers Road and 16th Street near the southern border of Lombard and the western border of Oakbrook Terrace. York Center has an elementary school established in 1958 and a fire district that includes the unincorporated areas of Lombard, Villa Park, Oak Brook, and Oakbrook Terrace. The York Center Cooperative (Co-op) community was founded soon after World War II as a cooperative on the principles of common ownership 'to foster and develop goodwill, high moral values, strong cooperative businesses, and strong citizenship.' Louis Shirky, who also established a Brethren church in central York, bought Goltermann Farm for the housing association. When it was founded, the cooperative was an experiment in what was then considered a radical way of life. then idyllic farm, which the cooperatives bought and divided. Members learned to market the 100-acre common property as an economically mixed community tolerant of all races, religions, and ethnicities. Many but not all early residents, including Louis Shirky, were members of the York Center Church of the Brethren. The goal was to create a new kind of community, a membership-based housing cooperative open to 'all men of good will,' said archivist Dennis Bilger of the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, 'That's probably true that York Cooperative Center was, if not the first, one of the first integrated housing developments in the United States.' In 1949, President Harry Truman issued an executive order prohibiting racial discrimination in making loans to the Federal Housing Administration. The turning point came after York Center Co-op members worked with the NAACP on a test case. The Girl Scouts were an important aspect of life at York Center. The Girl Scouts of the Chicago Metro Area and Northwest Indiana now serve the area, led by R. Hopley 'Hop' Roberts when he was on the DuPage County Board. The York Center Co-op was legally dissolved in 2010. In 2021, the Lombard Historical Society produced the documentary Common Good ~ The York Center Co-op Story, which it describes as: 'An epic story of pioneering and religious endeavors that they have spawned equitable housing, communities, and opportunities in a time of white flight, red lines, and alliances that have effectively prevented non-white Americans from fully participating in the American dream.
