James Lake is a natural lake in the northeast corner of the US state of Indiana. It is a popular spot for boating and fishing and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The fourth largest natural lake in the state, it has over 1,200 acres (490 hectares) of surface water and is made up of three basins. Its water quality is among the best of any lake in Indiana. The lake is the largest of a group of lakes known as the James Lake Range. These lakes are found primarily in Steuben County, Indiana, but also extend as far south as Michigan. In the 17th century the lake was part of a large swamp that was a hunting ground for the Potawatomi Indians. As European fur traders exploit the game, Indians are persuaded to sell their land and move west. Located in the three basins of the lake, Pokagon State Park is named for two Potawatomi rulers: Simon Pokagon and his father Leopold. Covering more than 1,200 acres (490 hectares), the park is open year-round. Camping is available, and the park includes hiking trails, a water slide, and two beaches. The park's Potawatomi Inn is located on the north side of the lower lake basin. James Lake was named for surveyor James Watson Riley. It was first surveyed by EH Lytle in 1831 and settlement began soon after. Settlement around the lake was initially slow as there were no access roads. The construction of a small railway line between the Angolan city and the southern end of the lake spurred development, as visitors could travel to Angola by train and connect to the lake. After arriving at the lake by train, many original cabin owners would boat to their cabin. With the exception of Pokagon State Park and one private campground, nearly the entire shoreline of the lake is now developed. Much of the development is chalets and houses, which started over 100 years ago. Two other major lakes, Jimmerson Lake and Snow Lake, are connected to James Lake. The water from these lakes flows west, eventually reaching Lake Michigan.
