New Harmony is a historic town on the Wabash River in Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana. It is located 15 miles (24 km) north of Mount Vernon, the county seat, and is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The city's population was 789 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1814 by the Harmony Society led by George Rapp and was originally known as Harmony (aka Harmony or New Harmony). In its early years, the 20,000-acre (8,100 ha) settlement was home to Lutherans who had broken away from the official church of the Duchy of Wrttemberg and immigrated to the United States. The Harmonists built a new town in the desert, but in 1824 they decided to sell their property and move back to Pennsylvania. Robert Owen, a Welsh industrialist and social reformer, bought the town in 1825 with the intention of founding a new utopian community and renamed it New Harmony. Owen's social experiment failed two years after it began. New Harmony has transformed science education and research in the United States. Citizens established the first public library, a municipal theater club, and a public school system open to both men and women. Among its prominent citizens were Owen's sons: Robert Dale Owen, an Indiana congressman and social reformer who supported legislation establishing the Smithsonian Institution; David Dale Owen, a leading state and federal geologist; William Owen, a New Harmony businessman; and Richard Owen, Indiana state geologist, Indiana University professor and first president of Purdue University. The city also served as the second headquarters of the United States Geological Survey. Many scholars and educators have contributed to the New Harmony intellectual community, including William Maclure, Thomas Say, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, Frances Wright, and others. Many old Harmonist buildings in the city have been restored. These structures, along with others associated with the Owenite community, are part of the New Harmony Historic District. Contemporary additions to the city include the Roofless Church and the Athenaeum. The New Harmony State Memorial is located south of town on State Road 69 in Harmony State Park.
