South Bend is a city and the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, for which it is named. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 103,453 and is the fourth largest city in Indiana. The metro area had a population of 324,501 in 2020, while the combined statistical area had a population of 812,199. The city is located south of the Indiana-Michigan border. The area was settled by fur traders in the early 19th century and incorporated as a city in 1865. The St. Joseph River shaped South Bend's economy in the mid-20th century. Access to the river encouraged the development of heavy industry, such as the Studebaker Corporation, Oliver Chilled Plow Company and other large corporations. South Bend's population declined after 1960, reaching a peak of 132,445. This was largely due to the exodus to the suburbs as well as the decline of Studebaker and other heavy industries. Today, South Bend's largest industries are health care, education, small business, and tourism. Major remaining companies headquartered in the area include Crowe, Honeywell, and AM General. The city's economy and culture are influenced by its proximity to the University of Notre Dame. In the 2010s, the city's population began to grow for the first time in nearly 50 years. The former Studebaker factory and surrounding area, now called Ignition Park, will be transformed into a technology hub to attract new industries. The city has been featured in national media coverage by former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries and current secretary of transportation in the Biden administration.
