Fort Leavenworth (/lvnwr/) is a United States Army installation in Leavenworth County, Kansas in the town of Leavenworth approximately 20 miles northwest of Kansas City. Built in 1827, it is the second oldest active U.S. Army post west of Washington, D.C. and the oldest permanent settlement in Kansas. Fort Leavenworth has long been known as 'the intellectual heart of the military.' As the country expanded westward, Fort Leavenworth was a popular destination for thousands of passing soldiers, surveyors, immigrants, Native Americans, preachers, and settlers. Today the garrison supports the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) by providing the headquarters for the Combined Arms Center (CAC) which the United States Army operates and maintains. The mission of the CAC includes leadership development, collective training, Army doctrine, and combat conduct (current and future). Fort Leavenworth is also home to the Military Correctional Complex, which includes the United States Detention Headquarters, the Department of Defense's only maximum security prison, and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Center. Additionally, Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports many tenant organizations associated directly and indirectly with CAC functions, including the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Office of Foreign Military Studies. The fort covers 5,600 acres (2,266 ha) and 7,000,000 square feet (650,321 m2/0.65 km2) of space in 1,000 buildings and 1,500 wards. It is located on the Frontier Military Scenic Byway (US Route 69 and K-7 corridor), which was originally a military highway connecting Fort Scott and Fort Gibson. Fort Leavenworth was also the base for the African American soldiers of the U.S. Army's 10th Cavalry Regiment, which was raised at Fort Leavenworth on September 21, 1866. They became known as the 'Buffalo Soldiers' after the nickname of the Native American tribes they fought against. The term was eventually applied to all African American regiments formed in 1866.
