Maysville is a hometown in Mason County, Kentucky, United States and the county seat of Mason County. The population was 8,782 in 2019, making it the 51st largest city in Kentucky by population. Maysville is located on the Ohio River, 106 km northeast of Lexington. It is the capital of the Maysville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Mason and Lewis counties. Two bridges cross the Ohio River from Maysville to Aberdeen, Ohio: the 1931 Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge and the 2001 William H. Harsha Bridge. Maysville borders the Outer Bluegrass Region and is of historic significance to the Colony of Kentucky. The city's founders included pioneers Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone. Later, Maysville became a major port on the Ohio River for the northeastern part of the state. It exported bourbon whiskey, hemp and tobacco, the latter two produced mainly by African-American slaves before the Civil War. It was once a center for wrought iron manufacturing, from where wrought iron was shipped upriver to decorate buildings in Cincinnati, Ohio, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Other small manufacturers also settled in early Maysville, and manufacturing remains a large part of the modern economy. Under the management of Henry Means Walker, Maysville hosted one of the largest tobacco auction fields in the world for most of the 20th century. Maysville was an important stop on the Underground Railroad because the Ohio Free State was directly across the river. Abolitionist author Harriet Beecher Stowe visited the area in 1833 and witnessed a slave auction outside the courthouse in Washington, the original county seat and now Maysville historic district. She included her scene in her influential novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, published in 1852.
