Peabody was a post office in Clay County, Kentucky, USA, serving the land of a coal and lumber mining company purchased by Francis Peabody from Peabody Energy and which eventually became part of a national forest. It closed in 1982. The Red Bird Buying Unit Ranger Station is located in Peabody. The land was originally bought from local landowners by a group of Manchester businessmen who sold it to Peabody in about 1907. The Post Office was first established on 11 June 1909 as Annalee at the mouth of the Big Double Creek in the Red Bird River. by postmaster and merchant Floyd M. Chadwell. He was named after his new neighbor's daughter, who was the civil engineer Thomas A. Bird had hired to manage the Peabody property. Under new Postmaster Jewell L. Galloway on July 1, 1930, it changed its name to Redbird River and received its final name, Peabody, on March 1, 1933, when the land ceased to belong to Peabody. Meanwhile, the land had been purchased by Thomas A. Bird, who still managed it, and there was a large Civilian Conservation Corps camp. It was sold to the Red Bird Timber Company in the 1960s, then to the US Government's Red Bird Purchase Unit in 1965 to continue as part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Fordson bought the land in the first quarter of 1923 to secure a supply of coal after an incident in September 1922 in which the Interstate Commerce Commission restricted the Ford Company's supply of coal for non-essential uses. a bulk purchase of several Peabody properties in Leslie, Clay, Perry, Bell and Letcher counties, the so-called 12,000-acre (4,900 ha) Peabody Tract, for which the total price was $2,783,000 and estimated capable to supply 20,000,000 short tons (18 Tg) of coal and 500,000,000 feet (150 mm) of lumber. Because of the conditions Fordson placed on his tenants to protect his coal and lumber interests, the Peabody Tract area generally lacked paved roads and telephones until it was sold in the 1960s. cleaning service', putting out forest fires and preventing others from chopping wood. It was also forbidden to fell trees or, without Fordson's prior permission, to transport trees.
