Shreveport (/richvprt/ SHREEV-Port) is a city in the US state of Louisiana. It is the third largest city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area is the fourth largest in Louisiana with a 2020 population of 393,406, although the 2020 census estimates its population at 397,590. Most of Shreveport is located within the parish of Caddo, of which it is the municipal seat. It stretches along the west bank of the Red River (including Wright Island, Charles and Marie Hamel Memorial Park, and Bagley Island) to the neighboring community of Bossier. The United States Census Bureau's 2020 census table for the city's population was 187,593, although the American Community Survey census estimates were 189,890. Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation formed to develop a city at the junction of the newly navigable Red River and the Texas Trail, an overland route leading to the newly independent Republic of Texas. Before Texas became independent, this route reached Mexico. It developed during the 20th century and became a national oil industry center after the discovery of oil in Louisiana. Standard Oil of Louisiana (merged with Standard Oil of New Jersey and now part of ExxonMobil) and United Gas Corporation (now part of Pennzoil) were headquartered in the city until the 1960s and 1980s. After losing oil industry jobs , the country has faced a declining population, poverty, drug and violent crime following the shutdown of operations of Shreveport (a General Motors vehicle plant) and other economic woes. However, the city continues to work to revitalize its infrastructure, boost the economy through diversification, and reduce crime. Despite these efforts, in 2021 the city had the most homicides in its history, surpassing the previous record set in 1993. Shreveport is the educational, business and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region of Arkansas, Louisiana and dating in Texas. It is home to Centenary College of Louisiana, Louisiana State University Shreveport, Louisiana Tech University Shreveport, Southern University at Shreveport, and Louisiana Baptist University.
