Marblehead is a New England beach town in Essex County, Massachusetts on the North Shore. At the 2020 census, the population was 20,441. The city is located on a small peninsula that extends into the northern part of Massachusetts Bay. Attached to the city is a nearby island known as Marblehead Neck, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Marblehead Harbor lies between the mainland and the neck, protected by shallow shoals and offshore rocks. In addition to downtown Marblehead, there are two other districts within the city: Old Town, the original city center, and Clifton, which borders the neighboring town of Swampscott. A town with roots in commercial fishing and yachting, Marblehead was a major shipyard and is often credited as the birthplace of the United States Navy, a title sometimes contested with nearby Beverly. Marblehead was once the fishing capital of Massachusetts. It is also the origin of Marine Corps aviation. Three US Navy ships are named USS Marblehead. A water sports center, it is a popular destination for sailing, kayaking and fishing. At the end of the 19th century, several yacht clubs were founded here, which are still sailing centers today. Here you will find Marblehead Lighthouse, Fort Sewall, Little Harbour, Marblehead Neck Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, Crocker Park and Devereux Beach. Archibald Willard's famous painting The Spirit of '76 is currently in Abbot Hall. Much of historic downtown is protected by the Marblehead Historic District. Marblehead is also home to the Marblehead Men's Softball League which was founded in 1939 and is the oldest and oldest adult softball league in the world.
