Mattapan (/mtpn/) is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Historically, Mattapan was part of nearby Dorchester and became part of Boston when Dorchester was annexed in 1870. Mattapan is the original Native American name for the Dorchester area, possibly meaning 'a place to sit.' At the 2010 census, it had a population of 36,480, most of whom were immigrants. Like other neighborhoods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mattapan grew both residential and commercial as railroads and streetcars made downtown Boston increasingly accessible. Mattapan is primarily a residential area and is a mix of social housing, small apartment blocks, single and semi-detached houses and three-family housing (known locally as 'Dreidecker' or 'Dreidecker'). Blue Hill Avenue and Mattapan Square, where Blue Hill Avenue, River Street and Cummins Highway meet, is the commercial center of the neighborhood and houses banks, law firms, restaurants and retail stores. The new Mattapan branch of the Boston Public Library opened in 2009 for more than $4 million. Mattapan has many green spaces in the neighborhood. Harambee Park, the Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, Clark-Cooper Community Gardens, and the historic Forest Hill Cemetery all qualify as green spaces in the Mattapan neighborhood. Mattapan's population structure is diverse, with a large population of Haitians, Caribbean immigrants, and African Americans. Mattapan has public services such as a recently renovated municipal health center and gendarmerie services. Mattapan is criss-crossed by a tram service, accessible via Ashmont.
