Broomes Island is a small riverfront community and census-designated place (CDP) at the southern end of MD 264 in Calvert County, Maryland, United States, on the Patuxent River. It is located approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Prince Frederick, the county seat. CDP's population was 421 as of 2019 census estimates. Although Broomes Island is a fairly small community, it does have its own post office and has a zip code of 20615. In November 2007, the United States Postal Service deemed to close the small post office. Post Office and divert all mail through the largest branch of the Saint-Lonard post office. After local residents contacted U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski about the proposed closure, the Postal Service decided not to close the Post Office. Broomes Island is located near the mouth of St. Leonard's Creek, the largest tributary of the Patuxent River which lies entirely within Calvert County. Several major naval battles took place near Broomes Island during the War of 1812. There was a large oyster canning industry on Broomes Island in the early to mid 20th century. In recent years, most Broomes Island residents have moved to other workplaces. Every May, former Maryland State Senator Bernie Fowler hosted a 'wate-in' on Broomes Island, during which he and others waded through the Patuxent River so their feet were no longer visible. This was done with his permission on Mr. Donald Rogers' property. Fowler started the annual Patuxent tradition of raising awareness of water clarity. In recent years, the 'Wade-in' has become a noteworthy public event, with many officials joining Fowler in the march, including Maryland Governors Martin O'Malley and Robert Ehrlich and US Senator Barbara Mikulsky . It doesn't happen there anymore. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused moderate damage to many structures on Broomes Island. In particular, the last vestige of Broomes Island's important oyster industry, a large barn used to shuck red oysters, is doomed. The oyster shell barn site is now part of the local seafood restaurant, Stoney's. The grounds are now a venue for weddings and other events.
