Washington DC. it's about 25 miles (40 km) away. The township of Darnestown has existed in Darnestown at the intersection of present-day Darnestown Road and Seneca Road, as Census reported, since about 1800. In 1878 the township had 200 inhabitants. The name Darnestown derives from William Darne, who owned most of the land in the area in the early 19th century when the parish post office was opened. Settlement in the area began around 1750 and the small community was first called Mount Pleasant, then Darnes before the name Darnestown was used. The community thrived in the 19th century during the Chesapeake Canal and Ohio's golden years, when improved transportation gave area farmers access to more markets. In the 1880 census, the United States Census Bureau began using a minor civil division (MCD) category to aggregate population, and the new township of Darnestown had a population of approximately 1,500. Growth stopped in the late 19th century when a new railroad line passed through the community. In the 1960s, wealthy families began buying farmland in Montgomery County for new homes and equestrian uses. Today, many of Darnestown's CDP residents are affluent and live in large houses on large lots, a fact that is reflected in their high average income and low housing density. The median household income is nearly $228,000, and 73 percent of residents age 25 and older have at least a bachelor's degree or higher. The community benefits from proximity to workplaces such as the Shady Grove Hospital area and the I-270 technology corridor. Washington can be reached by car or public transportation. Beginning with the 2000 census, the Census Bureau made Darnestown a census-designated place.
