Gibson Island is an island and unincorporated community on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It is part of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA and is the eastern terminus of Maryland Route 177. It is connected to Pasadena, Maryland by a causeway. The two locations do not share a postal code. Gibson Island's history includes its use as a summer home by Native Americans in the 17th century. It happened to Captain John Smith on his voyage to the Chesapeake Bay in 1608. Land grants began around 1680. In the early 20th century, W. Stuart Symington, Jr. (18711926) purchased the properties of the island (including three existing ones). Island Farms) with his brother Thomas to develop the island into a residential community. One of the first owners was a man named Gibson, after whom the island is named. Following the advice of Edward H. Bouton, developer of Baltimore's Roland Park and Guilford neighborhoods, the Symingtons hired landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to create a master plan for the island. The Symington brothers set aside some areas for community facilities and divided the rest of the land into building lots which were put up for sale by the Gibson Island Company, now known as the Gibson Island Corporation. In 1925, the first law and convention were passed and registered. From then until today, the company has had its own real estate department which deals specifically with listing and selling properties on the island. The global economic crisis halted the rapid development of the island. An 18-hole golf course designed by Charles B. Macdonald and built in the 1920s had to be reduced to nine holes where it still stands today. In 1936, corporate ownership was reorganized, giving the island's owners more control. This change has led to an increased emphasis on conserving the island's natural environment, with approximately two-thirds of the land area set aside for recreation, forestry and open space. Today, property prices on the island start at over $1 million, with a median sale price in 2020 of $1,625,000. This makes Gibson Island the most expensive zip code in Maryland and the 75th most expensive zip code in the country. Today Gibson Island is a gated community operated by the Gibson Island Corporation. The Gibson Island Club restricts access to the island and its facilities to residents or those with a formal reason to visit. Many Islanders are temporary residents who reside primarily in Washington, DC or Baltimore. Island features include a yacht club, golf, tennis, clay pigeon shooting, a post office, historical society, and an Episcopal church.
