Greenbelt is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland in the United States, and a suburb of Washington, D.C. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,921. Greenbelt is the first and largest of three experimental and controversial New Deal Greenbelt cities, along with Greenhills, Ohio and Greendale, Wisconsin. The Green Belt was designed and built by the federal government. The cooperative was founded in 1935 by Under Secretary of State for Agriculture Rexford Guy Tugwell, whose supposedly collectivist ideology encountered opposition to the Greenbelt Towns scheme during his short tenure. The project became legal on April 8, 1935, when Congress passed the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act of 1935. Based on the powers conferred by this law, on May 1, 1935, President Franklin D Roosevelt issued an executive order establishing the states United Resettlement Administration (RA/RRA). Originally known as Maryland Special Project No. 1, the project was officially named the Greenbelt when the Suburban Resettlement Division of the Resettlement Administration began construction on January 13, 1936, about eight miles north of Washington. Complete plans for the Greenbelt were discussed in the White House on April 30, 1936 by President Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The first tenants moved into the city on September 30, 1937, after being selected through a rigorous application process. The construction works included structures in the Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and Bauhaus architectural styles. The Greenbelt is considered a landmark phase in urban development because it was the original blueprint for privately built suburbs in Washington, DC, the proposed cities of Reston, Virginia and Columbia, Maryland. The original federally built core of the city, known locally as the Old Greenbelt, has been designated a Greenbelt Historic District by the Maryland Historical Trust and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic District. The Greenbelt's population, which includes residents of privately constructed housing after the city's federal mandate ended, was recorded at 23,068 at the 2010 United States Census and 24,921 at the 2020 Census.
