Alberta is an unincorporated community in L'Anse Township, Baraga County, Michigan, United States. It is located off US Highway 41 (US 41) approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of the village of L'Anse at 463837N 882846W / 46.64361N 88.47944 W Alberta is home to the Ford Center, operated by Michigan Technological University's College of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences. The community was established in 1936 after Henry Ford declared the banks of Plumbago Creek the ideal site for a lumber mill. Ford named the city 'Alberta' after the daughter of Ford's then Upper Peninsula operations manager, who was either Fred J. Johnson or Edward G. Kingsford (hence the names City of Kingsford, Michigan and Kingsford Charcoal). Ford's intention was to establish a model lumber mill and lumber town and to establish a factory in the woods of southeast Keweenaw. When Ford founded Alberta, wood was used extensively in automobiles. The original Alberta village consisted of twelve houses, two schools and a steam mill built to the most modern standards of the time. Plumbago Creek was dammed to create a reservoir to supply the town and mill with water. The mill was a two story white clapboard building and is still standing. Today it houses part of the Alberta Village Museum. The sawmill had a capacity of 14,000 ft (33 m3) per day for hardwood and 20,000 ft (47 m3) per day for softwood. This was a small capacity even by 1936 standards, as the other three Ford plants in Michigan's Upper Peninsula produced twenty to twenty-five times as much. Albertans were expected to spend their time logging, milling, and farming. There are similarities between the communities founded and operated by Ford in Alberta and the city of Belterra in the state of Par, Brazil. It has been noted that both cities were generally founded by the Ford Motor Company at about the same time. Both provided the resources needed to build the Model T, with Alberta supplying lumber and Belterra supplying rubber for the company. Ford had ceased operations in the community around 1943 and the community gradually began to decline, although it was not until 1954 that the sawmill went out of business and the Ford Motor Company officially made a donation to the city of Alberta, Michigan. and the 1,700 acres (690 ha) of land surrounding it, now the Michigan Technological University College of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences. The surviving buildings that were part of the original village on this property are now used as a museum, while also supporting research and serving as a center for educational programs for those majoring in forestry and ecology. The buildings are also used by many universities around the world. in the United States for forestry education.
