Cassopolis is a village in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Cass County. It is located primarily in LaGrange Township, with a small portion extending east to Penn Township. The city and county are named for statesman Lewis Cass, a New Hampshire native and prominent pre-Civil War U.S. Senator from Michigan. Diamond Lake, one of Michigan's 100 largest lakes, is located in Cassopolis. Cassopolis is part of the South Bend-Mishawaka Metropolitan Statistical Area, IN-MI. At the 2010 census, the population was 1,774. Cassopolis was abandoned by European Americans in 1831. By that time it had already become a county seat. It was incorporated as a village in 1863. The county developed agriculture and some industries. Cassopolis was a transit point for the Underground Railroad, through which sympathizers helped Southern refugees gain freedom in the North and Canada. Some refugees continued to travel through Michigan to settle in Canada to avoid the risk of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which increased incentives for capture. However, in the 1850s, many African Americans and people of mixed African American, Sapponi, and Pumenkey ancestry also settled in Cass County. In the 1960s, a group of African Americans associated with the Nation of Islam purchased approximately 1,000 acres of farmland in the area. Work on this acquisition was overseen by a Cassopolis High graduate.
